MGCCC trio combine for no-hitter

Mississippi Gulf Coast's Antoine Harris, Matthew DeLano and Evan Keith teamed up to throw a no-hitter Wednesday night in Chalmette, blanking Nunez 5-0 to earn a split in the season-opening doubleheader for the Bulldogs.

The three freshman combined to strike out 14 batters to help erase the sting of a 15-walk opener that Gulf Coast lost 13-9 in a nine-inning game.

Harris, coincidentally making his first college start on his high school field, needed just 68 pitches to get through his five innings, striking out nine. DeLano, from Biloxi, struck out his only batter to lead off the fifth, and Keith, from Vancleave, struck out all five batters he faced for the save.

It's the third no-hitter for Gulf Coast in the past five seasons. Dylan Mills-Derouen threw one in 2017, and Kole Kittrell's came in 2018.

Tucker Thomas (So., Biloxi, Biloxi) had a first-inning sacrifice fly and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth. Alec Hardy (Fr., Stone, Wiggins) had a two-run homer in the seventh, and Connor Spencer (Fr., Hernando, Hernando) tacked on an RBI double.

Thomas, Spencer and Cameron Cotten (So., George County, Lucedale) had home runs in the first game, and Louis Morgan (So., East Central, Hurley) drove in three runs. P.J. Harrison (Fr., Harrison Central, Gulfport) had three hits

The Bulldogs turn right around Thursday and play another doubleheader, hosting Baton Rouge. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
