A Britt Netterville walk-off grand slam was the difference Friday evening as the Bears picked up their first win of the 2020 baseball season with a 6-2 win over the visiting Mineral Area College Cardinals. The Cardinals achieved a split in the doubleheader with a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 5th inning of the opener when Keith McKigney, on base via a walk, scored on a Cody Ellzey double to right field. Ellzey later added a single.
The lead held until the top of the 7th when a walk and two base hits allowed the Cardinals to take a 2-1 lead.
The Bears (1-1) then tied the game at 2-all in the bottom of the frame on a Braydon Coffey bases-loaded single. Two batters later, with the bases still loaded, Netterville stepped to the plate and launched the first pitch he saw over the left-field fence for the game winner, his second hit of the game.
An outstanding performance from Rigell Robinson also contributed to the win. The sophomore right-hander went the full seven innings, striking out 13 batters, while allowing a pair of runs on seven hits and issuing only three bases on balls.
Logan Larrimore had two singles in the game for the Bears.
The Bears were held hitless in the finale. Nicolas Scucchi took the loss on the mound, giving up three runs on a hit and four walks in 0.2 inning.
The Bears return to the diamond on February 19 when they travel to Chalmette, LA, to face the Nunez Community College Pelicans. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4:00.
