Keith McKigney picked up the win on the mound, scored a pair of runs and drove in two as the Bears defeated the Nunez Pelicans 9-3 Wednesday night in Chalmette, LA, in game two of their doubleheader. Nunez took the opener, 7-2.
The teams were tied 1-1 after an inning in of the nightcap. The Bears (2-4) picked up their run in the top of the frame on a solo homer from Britt Netterville, the first of his two hits in the game.
McKigney and Blake Cherry, on base via walks, scored on an Ajani Johnson triple in the top of the second inning to put the Bears on top 3-1. McKigney tripled in the Bears' third to plate two runs, and later scored on an error, to increase the Bears' lead to 6-1.
The Pelicans (7-4) picked up single runs in the third and fourth innings to pull to within 6-3.
The Bears closed out the scoring with two runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh, each scoring as a result of errors.
McKigney spent 3.2 innings on the mound, striking out five batters and surrendering six hits while walking two to get the win. Chase Guitreau pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, striking out four while giving up two hits and walking one to record the save.
The Bears trailed 2-1 after an inning in game one, getting their run on Netterville's two-out double.
McKigney tallied the Bears' final run of the game with a solo homer in the top of the seventh.
Jack Hilton took the loss on the mound, giving up four runs on eight hits and four walks in 4 innings of work.
Landan Stewart had a triple for the Bears while Cody Ellzey doubled.
The Bears' home games on Friday versus Frontier Community College have been cancelled so they are next scheduled to take the field on February 25 at Co-Lin. The single nine-inning game, scheduled for a 6:00 first pitch, is the first of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade.
