PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast ran into a buzz saw Friday, dropping a doubleheader to No. 2 Northwest Florida State at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
The Raiders won 13-3 and 11-5 in a pair of seven-inning games, pounding out 12 hits in each game.
Gulf Coast (4-8) led early in both games. The Bulldogs were up 1-0 after three in the first game, and were one pitch away from getting out of the fourth in the lead. NWFS slugged a grand slam and never looked back.
Nick Sims (So., New Hope, New Hope) had a double among his two hits for Gulf Coast. Dawson Walters (Fr., Tri-County Academy, Flora) and Canaan Ray (Fr., Poplarville, Poplarville) also doubled.
In the second game, Walters doubled in a pair of runs in the second inning and Tucker Thomas (So., Biloxi, Biloxi) got plunked with the bases loaded to tie the score at 3.
Cameron Cotten (So., George County, Lucedale) hit his fourth homer of the year on the first pitch in the fourth for a lead, but NWFS tied it up with a solo shot of its own in the top of the fourth. The Raiders (16-3) scored five times in the fifth to pull away.
Cameron Gray (Fr., East Central, Hurley) homered in the sixth and finished with two hits. Cotton also had two hits.
Gulf Coast returns to action at Perk on Tuesday when Nunez visits. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
