Northeast Holds Off Coahoma For First Win

BOONEVILLE - Northeast Mississippi Community College survived a scare from visiting Coahoma Community College to win its division opener by a 20-18 score on Thursday, September 13 at Tiger Stadium.

It capped off a successful Military Appreciation Day at Northeast. Veterans were honored on the field pregame while a new monument on campus dedicated to our brave men and women in the armed forces was unveiled earlier in the day.

Michael Baugus connected on field goals of 27 and 37 yards, the latter of which turned out to be the winning points for the Tigers (1-2, 1-0) with 8:54 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Coahoma (0-3, 0-1) had a chance to tie the game late after a blocked punt set up a 3-yard touchdown run for Jaylin Jones. But the Tigers' two-point try failed and Northeast was able to cling to its advantage.

Northeast outgained the visiting Tigers by a 256-145 edge. Quarterback Zac Oden had his finest night of the season with 172 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Oden's touchdown passes went to Carson Banks (67 yards) in the first quarter and Kortlon Hubbard (54 yards) in the third. Hubbard's catch-and-run gave Northeast the lead for good.

The Tigers are back on the road next week at Holmes. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Goodman.
