POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River receiver K.J. Breland (Wiggins; Forrest County AHS) is headed to the next level. The sophomore signed with Delta State during a ceremony Friday at Dobie Holden Stadium.
"I'm excited. It's going to be my last stop so I'm happy I'll be able to keep doing what I love to do; play ball and go to school," Breland said, raving about DSU's combination of facility, campus and coaching staff. "I had a couple offers but this was the best offer I had."
Breland is the 12th Wildcat from the 2018 roster to sign at a four-year school: Quarterback Cooper Callis (Jackson, Mo.) signed with Southern Illinois; tight end Donavon Hickman (Union) signed with Louisiana-Monroe; linebacker Cory Jackson (Jackson; Madison-Ridgeland Academy) signed with Old Dominion; defensive lineman Gi'Narious Johnson (Gulfport) signed with South Alabama; offensive lineman Donald Kinchen (Oak Grove) signed with Mississippi College; defensive back Kyron Norwood (Hattiesburg; Forrest County AHS) signed with Lamar; receiver Tyler Polk (St. Martin) signed with Davenport; defensive linemen Jaeden Ridgeway (Pascagoula) and Josh Smith (New Orleans; Landry Walker) signed with Southeastern Louisiana; offensive lineman Ivory Scott (Kenner, La.; Bonnabel) signed with Arkansas State; and running back Ron Thompson (Bassfield) signed with North Alabama.
"K.J. has been a great player for us as a two-year starter," Pearl River coach Ted Egger said. "He had a lot of production and did all the right things. We're excited for his opportunity."
Breland was a reliable target for PRCC's quarterbacks the last two seasons. After hauling in 14 passes for 202 yards and three scores as a freshman, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Breland caught 23 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns this season.
Breland had a breakout performance in the season finale, a thrilling 24-21 victory at Delta, when he caught five passes for 89 yards.
