CLARKSDALE– Coahoma Community College has played a tough schedule to prepare for the MACJC Northern Division. Head Coach Michael Stringer was looking for his team to set the tone in division play especially playing defending MACJC North Champion Northeast Mississippi Community College.
Northeast proved their worth with a 88-72 victory at The Pinnacle on Monday night.
Four players scored in double figures for Northeast. Denzel McDuffey led the Tigers with 17 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Brice Smith finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Bryant Givens scored 12 points and four assists. Thomas Cain scored 10 points.
Two players scored in double figures for Coahoma. Malik Bailey led the Tigers with 15 points and four steals. Tarquise Harris finished with 12 points and three assists.
Northeast Tigers (7-1, 1-0 MACJC North) had a hot start leading 24-6. Brandon Mills and Josh Jackson scored layups in the paint. Dykelius Grandberry tried to get Coahoma back in the game. He scored a three pointer cutting the lead to 24-9.
Northeast answered with a three pointer by Givens. Then Smith scored a driving layup extending the lead to 34-14. Dequan Morris and DeNori Berry scored a pair of jumpers cutting the lead to 34-19.
McDuffey and Felix Hayes scored a pair of layups giving Northeast the lead 48-31 at the half.
Coahoma Tigers had a strong start to the second half. Nkosi King and Harris scored a pair of layups cutting the lead to 48-35.
Northeast answered with a 12-2 run. McDuffey knocked down a three extending the lead to 60-37.
Northeast took control for the rest of the game. Givens scored a three pointer to put the game out of reach 85-58.
Coahoma goes to 2-8 (0-1 MACJC North) on the season. The Tigers will have a chance at redemption Thursday night, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. in the Pinnacle when they host Jones County Junior College. It will be part of a double header that's preceded by Coahoma vs Jones County women's game at 6 p.m.
