Schloegel loses in finals at NJCAAs

No. 14 Mississippi Gulf Coast finished 18th at the NJCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship to come in, and coach Gary Bourgeois called the 2019 season a success.

Anthony Schloegel (Fr., Gulfport/St. Patrick) lost a third-set tiebreaker in the No. 6 singles finals of the consolation bracket on Friday in Tucson, Ariz., falling to Barton's Twer Leteceur 6-4, 3-6, (8-5).

"We left some points on the court because of illness and heat, but overall I thought it was a successful year," Bourgeois said. "We finished about where we were ranked, so I'm happy with the results."

The Bulldogs lose only two sophomores to graduation, so the future looks bright for the team that won its first 15 dual matches of the year and finished 16-1.

"I'm not content because we didn't win the state and region," Bourgeois said. "We've some players coming back who can help us next year, and we've got some talented players coming back. I think we should be able to compete for a state championship, men and women."
