PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast opens the 2019 softball season Feb. 2 in the brand new stadium at Ross-Smith Field, coach Kenneth Long announced Thursday.
A doubleheader against Marion Military starting at noon will be the first game action at the new facility. The teams will return the following day for another two games.
Gulf Coast has home games against LSU Eunice, which finished fourth at last year's, and an MACJC slate of games that includes Northwest Mississippi, Copiah-Lincoln, East Mississippi, Pearl River, Northeast Mississippi, Meridian and Coahoma.
The MACJC Tournament format changes this year to a straight eight-team, double-elimination bracket played May 9-11. The top three teams advance to play in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament at the MACJC champions field, with LSU-E joining the field.
Two teams from that double-elimination tournament will advance to the NJCAA Tournament, which again will be played at Traceway Park in Clinton. The championship will be determined May 22-25.
