CLARKSDALE, Miss. — No. 7 Pearl River earned a split in its doubleheader at Coahoma on Saturday. After falling 7-6 in Game 1 the Wildcats roared back to take Game 2 4-1 in six innings.
The Wildcats scored the first run of the game on a Tate Parker (Gulfport; West Harrison) single but CCC put up a three-spot in the bottom of the inning and never relinquished the lead.
Trailing 6-4 heading into the ninth, Graham Crawford (Hattiesburg; Sumrall) tied it up with a two-run shot. The deadlock was short lived, however, as CCC walked off the Wildcats in the bottom of the frame.
Crawford swung a hot bat for PRCC, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Nick Skaggs (Biloxi) was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
The Wildcats jumped ahead early in the nightcap, plating two runs in the first inning with Austen Izzio (Carriere; Pearl River Central) and Skaggs crossing the plate.
Pearl River tacked on two more runs in the fifth on an RBI double from Skaggs and a single from Parker.
That was all the Wildcats would need in Game 2 as CCC only plated one run before the game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness.
Turner Swistak (Oak Grove) pitched a gem for PRCC, striking out five against eight hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings. Landon Harper (Meridian; Northeast Lauderdale) struck out the only batter he faced.
Skaggs led PRCC's offense with two hits.
The Wildcats return to the diamond on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Copiah-Lincoln starting at 3 p.m. The games will be livestreamed at PRCCMedia.com/gold and can also be heard on WRJWRadio.com.
